Rome Museums Open on Monday: Full List

rome museums open on monday

Monday is the weekly closing day for many Rome museums, yet the Vatican Museums, Capitoline Museums and Castel Sant’Angelo stay open. For Rome museums open on Monday, build the day around those, and avoid the Museo Nazionale Romano and MAXXI.

A visitor with only Monday free in Rome has to plan around the closing day from the start. This list sorts venues by Monday status. For the wider calendar of shows, see art exhibitions in Rome.

Monday status at a glance

Most of the big names fall into two groups: venues that open every day, and venues that close on Monday. The table sorts the main art and history sites into those groups, with a few that sit in between.

Venue Monday status Hours listed Planning use
Vatican Museums Open Mon–Sat 9:00–18:00, final entry 16:00 The strongest all-day anchor for a Monday
Capitoline Museums Open Every day 9:30–19:30 A full-day or half-day art and sculpture stop
Castel Sant’Angelo Open Mon–Sun 9:00–19:30 Easy to pair with a Vatican visit
Museum of Roman Civilisation Open, free admission Every day 9:30–19:30 A no-cost option for a Monday
Museum of the Liberation of Rome Open, free admission Every day 9:00–19:00 A short, free history stop
Baths of Caracalla Open, shorter day Monday 9:00–14:00 (2019 listing) Go in the morning only
Museo Nazionale Romano Closed 9:00–19:45 on open days Move to another weekday
MAXXI No Monday hours listed Tue–Fri 11:00–19:00; Sat–Sun 11:00–20:00 Save for Tuesday onward
Geological Museum Closed unless a public holiday Fri–Sun and holidays, free Not a Monday option

Hours come from the KAYAK guide to Rome museums (2023) and, for the Baths of Caracalla, a 2019 Monday-opening roundup.

Vatican Museums

The Vatican Museums are open on Monday, and a Monday ticket runs on the same hours as the rest of the week from Tuesday to Saturday: 9:00 to 18:00, with final entry at 16:00, according to KAYAK. The museums sit in another sovereign state, which is why a Rome museum roundup calls them the most visible exception to the Monday closures.

This is the venue to choose if Monday is your only art day and you want the largest collection. The museum’s official site publishes opening hours and temporary closures, so check it the day before. Our vatican museums art collection guide covers what to see once inside.

Capitoline Museums

The Capitoline Museums at Piazza del Campidoglio open every day, 9:30 to 19:30, and the 2019 roundup lists them among the museums open to visitors on Mondays. Entry requires a fee.

They suit visitors who want classical sculpture and civic art without the scale of the Vatican. The museums close on 1 January, 1 May and 25 December, so a Monday that lands on one of those dates is a closed day. Both facts come from KAYAK; the Monday listing is from the 2019 roundup.

Castel Sant’Angelo and the Baths of Caracalla

Castel Sant’Angelo is listed as open Monday to Sunday, 9:00 to 19:30, so Monday is a normal day there. It is a sensible second stop after a Vatican morning, because the two sites share the same part of the city and Monday hours at the castle run well past the Vatican’s 18:00 close.

The Baths of Caracalla are open on Monday only until 14:00, with a 9:00 start, according to the 2019 roundup. That makes them a morning plan, not an afternoon fallback. Because that listing is several years old, confirm the Monday window on the site’s own page before travelling. Castel Sant’Angelo hours are from KAYAK; the Baths of Caracalla hours are from From Home to Rome.

Free museums open on Monday

Two free venues are listed as open every day. The Museum of Roman Civilisation runs 9:30 to 19:30, and the Museum of the Liberation of Rome runs 9:00 to 19:00, both with free admission according to KAYAK. They suit a budget-minded Monday or a gap between paid visits.

The paid venues are the opposite case. The Capitoline Museums and MAXXI both require a fee in the same listing, and no Monday-specific discount is listed for either. If you intend to pay for entry, read how to buy tickets for rome exhibitions before choosing a time.

Art galleries on Monday

Contemporary art is the weak spot on a Monday. MAXXI’s listed hours run Tuesday to Friday from 11:00 to 19:00 and Saturday to Sunday from 11:00 to 20:00, so Monday is not an opening day there, and entry requires a fee. Anyone planning a contemporary-art trip should shift it to Tuesday or later.

On a Monday itself, the art on offer is mostly historic: the Vatican Museums and the Capitoline Museums are the two main collections. Small independent galleries set their own days, so confirm hours on each gallery’s own page before crossing the city for one.

Museums closed on Monday

That pattern matches the general rule in the city: museums tend to close on Mondays, so assume a state or civic museum is shut until its own page says otherwise.

MAXXI and the Geological Museum fall in the same group, as the table shows. For all three, the better plan is to book a Tuesday to Sunday slot instead of hunting for a Monday exception.

Building a Monday plan

A fallback matters because a closed door is the likeliest Monday problem. Exteriors such as the Pantheon’s portico and its inscribed frieze can be seen from outside, which helps when a museum plan falls through.

  1. Choose one anchor. Pick the Vatican Museums for scale or the Capitoline Museums for a compact visit.
  2. Work back from last entry. The Vatican’s final entry is 16:00, and the Capitoline Museums stop admitting one hour before their 19:30 close, per KAYAK.
  3. Add a pairing. Castel Sant’Angelo or a free museum fits the rest of the day; the Baths of Caracalla only fit before 14:00.
  4. Move the closed venues. Put the Museo Nazionale Romano and MAXXI on another day.

Frequently asked questions

Do Monday opening hours differ from other days?

The Baths of Caracalla are the clear exception, with Monday ending at 14:00 in the 2019 listing. Sources: KAYAK and From Home to Rome.

Does a public holiday change the Monday closure?

It can at the Geological Museum, which is listed as closed on Mondays unless a public holiday and open Friday to Sunday and on holidays, with free admission (KAYAK). For other venues, including on Easter Monday, check the museum’s own page first.

Why is the Vatican Museums open when other museums close?

The museums are in another sovereign country, so they do not follow the Rome Monday pattern. The roundup describes them as the most visible exception.
